God is good, not vengeful: Messages of Faith | cleveland.com
The often glibly spoken thought is that "we all worship the same God." This is just not true. The God who would willingly send pain, suffering and death on his/her children as a test of our loyalty, a punishment for a lack of obedience, or some twisted notion to teach us a lesson or to stick with a divine plan for us is just the product of unfortunate human thinking. It is, among other things, an effort to secure power and authority for institutional religious systems.
University Circle United Methodist Church Palm Sunday Service on USTREAM. Now streaming every Sunday at 11am.
Dr. Chalker's Sermon: "A Mitigation Investigator". For the last month our great University Circle UMC video crew have been doing what I'd call an Alpha version of streaming our services on USTREAM. It's still Alpha and a little rough due to our poor AT&T DSL connection but it will be getting better as we refine our techniques and get our new HSD line installed. We recommend listening with headphones. Enjoy! Leave a comment and let us know what you think.
Snowstorm
Like many other places in the Mid West, we cancelled a meeting tonight. The projected snow falls make the highways particularly daunting. So, the word has gone out: STAY HOME. GO HOME.
The reaction has been fun. No one is particularly heartbroken about cancelling the meeting. It was an important one, too! But, not anyone particularly cares. Rescheduling is a happy prospect. Being home unexpectedly with freed up time to do whatever is a welcomed occasion.
I think that perhaps snow days and snow nights in an overscheduled world are what Sabbath was intended to be…at least emotionally and spiritually. God wants us to enjoy our days…or at least ONE of them each week. There needs to be “down time.” We don’t get enough of it. We don’t get enough time just to be; to be grateful, to be appreciative of living, to be free of an agenda set to accomplish tasks.
It’s a snow day. It’s a Sabbath. Amen.
